Gmünd received its town charter as early as 1346, and is thus one of the oldest towns in Carinthia. The town wall and the four town gates were built at about the this time.
Old & New
Founded in Upper Carinthia by the Archbishopric of Salzburg as a fortified market town during the time of disputes with the Count of Gorizia. First mentioned in documents in 1252. Promoted to the status of town in 1346. In Gmünd, the upkeep of the old town centre and its architecture has always been a question of honour. The colours of the houses are carefully matched and the buildings skillfully and tastefully restored. Everyday life mingles perfectly with Gmünd's historical architecture. The town boasts a wealth of smaller works of art and artistic details as well as larger historical buildings and dominating the entire town is the old castle, a ruined fortress with Gothic origins.
