Nockalm Road in the Nocky Mountains Biosphere Reserve
Nockalm road - Enjoy nature and delicious mountain fare
Inviting, easy-going and breathtaking: the 35-kilometer Nockalm Road is quite different from many other panoramic roads.
Instead of jagged rock, the road winds through verdant alpine meadows, fields with blooming alpine roses and sparse larch forests, offering rustic mountain lodges and easy hikes. Carinthia's Nocky Mountains are always within view, home to the Nocky Mountain Biosphere Reserve, a geographical rarity.
Feel the power of nature
Visitors to the home of the "Alpine Speick herb" will find picturesque themed nature trails and loop hiking trails with plenty of scenic overlooks along the way. The 1.5-kilometer "Elements Trail" features stone circles and instructions for power exercises while the "Silva Magica" adventure park offers an opportunity to explore nature with all the senses. The Nockalmhof Biosphere Reserve Center and the "Islands in the river of time" multimedia show give visitors a vivid and inspiring look at our environment.
Gourmet dishes to tickle your palate
Be sure to take lots of breaks along the Nockalm Road, where you'll find Carinthian cuisine is at its finest. Fish and game dishes, homemade cheese, liqueurs and schnapps and of course the Carinthian "Reindling" (a cinnamon and raisin cake) are on the menu at countless lodges and restaurants along the way.
Nockalmhof Biosphere Reserve Center
The Biosphere Reserve Center right next to the Nockalmhof featuring Austria‘s only “Petrified Worlds” fossils exhibition. Visitors will find a new multimedia and 3D cinema, spacious restaurant, a shop, the Biosphere Reserve Information Corner and an interactive children’s exhibition on the topic of “Bats,”.
Adventure exhibition "Wild Nock Mountains"
With the new exhibition "Wild Nock Mountains" in the Pfandlhütte, visitors will discover the animal world of the Nock Mountains in an entertaining, informative and playful way.
Interactive stations with riddles, films, descriptions of the animals and presentations of their habitats offer interesting insights into how wild animals, farm animals and people along the Nockalm Road live together as “good neighbors”.
